What does it mean to be an Emirati?

I'm in the process of interviewing and collecting information on Emirati artists to create a book. But first thing's first; Who is an Emirati? do you have to be born here to be one? does having an Emirati passport make you an Emirati?

Would love to hear your thoughts on this matter.
